I used to have very dark brown hair, the darkest shade that white-skinned people have naturally. On my 30th birthday I found my first white hair. For a while it looked like highlights, then I had it dyed with blonde highlights to hide it, then I gave in and let more white hairs appear. That was OK while the mix of brown and white looked like lighter brown hair overall, but now it's got to looking overall grey. So I dye it with an ash colour which takes it back not to brown all over, but the effect of brown with about 5 years worth of grey. This works for me because it doesn't look obviously dyed, which full brown did. Also the roots are a lot less noticeable.
I suspect the hair colouring products in UK and US are different. When I tried brown dye on mine it caused an overall yellow highlight which looked very wrong, and the two white wings I have in the front went a disgusting brassy yellow. So I use ash (which is supposed to be a blonde dye) to get my hair back to a semblance of brown with a bit of grey. Which is probably absolutely no use to someone who was blonde to start with. -- Money can't buy everything. That's what credit cards are for.
