When I was in college in the US (okay, it was 45 years ago), I took a class in Business Law. Name changes came up: It is perfectly legal to change your name (without going to court) as often as you wish, IF you are not doing it to defraud anyone and continue to accept and fulfill all the obligations of the previous name. BUT once you have gone to court to change your name, you must always go to court to do so.
At the same time, when I married the first time, I was told the proper thing to do was: drop the middle name, and add the husband's surname. So instead of Mary Jane Smith, she would then use - Mary Smith Jones. Usually the 'maiden surname' was just represented with an initial, ie. Mary S. Jones. Just a little 'history' from the Pacific Northwest USA. Lorri PS Isn't it interesting how world traditions and customs are different. That's one of the things I enjoy about this 'list community'.
