It is worth checking each individual electrical implement they plan on bringing. Many appliances work in both countries without a converter eg laptop & hairdryer. They may need to change a setting on these appliances to get the correct voltage.

Other small appliances however will need a travel converter, which would be best bought in a UK shop / airport shop. Generally it is better to buy converters in the UK to use with English appliances abroad. It is possible to buy them in some hardware stores here in Northfield, Illinois, but not in all hardware stores - and not all assistants know where to find them in the store.

After nearly 8 years of living here I am still using lots of English appliances (sewing machine, kitchen mixer, knife sharpener etc) via transformers, and they seem to work fine
