I filled my car's tank with petrol yesterday and was quite disconcerted to see the cost in pounds dial matching the quantity in litres dial as it filled.
The price-per-barrel of crude went up past $100 earlier in the week; you're seeing the results.
I expect other parts of the country have already exceeded the pound a litre mark.
When I compare European prices and ours, I get amused at the outraged squealing which goes on here every time the gas goes up. "My" (the nearest and the one I use all the time) gas station posted new prices on Wednesday: $3.47 (up from $3.27) for a *gallon* (US) of low-grade (low-octane). That's £1.76 for 3.81 litres. £ 0.46 per litre; *less than half* of what you're paying.
I have a fairly efficient car, though it's, probably, still a bit too big given that most of my driving is on short distances, in our little town. But, what I see in the grocery store's parking lot is that SUVs and pick-up trucks (both gas guzzling) beat out sedans at about 5:3 ratio. No wonder we had to invade I-wreck and try to grab their oil...
Of course, we do need to save every penny we can on gas, so that we can pay for our health insurance :) 332 days and counting; more and more often I see bumper stickers -- even on those SUVs and pick-ups <g> -- which say nothing more than "January 20, 2009" like a mantra of hope :)
