Whilst I agree with what Carole says in that it depends on your purpose, a website doesn't have to be be static, and it can be updated as often as you wish.

Most people choose blogs because they are easy to use in that you don't need to learn anything about web design or html, javascript and all the rest; you just post your photos and write the dialogue, but you are restricted to how the blog site owner thinks the layout should look, and you might have to put up with adverts and pop-ups.

Whilst some bits of my website have been in place for years, other parts get updated quite frequently (Addendum 4 for instance). I have one page where users can send in their vote for the next BL pattern (I will change it soon!!) and I've put mail-to links on several pages. Sometimes I experiment with fancy stuff (like the Advent calendar last December) or a birthday card with music and a twinkly candle.

It's not my style, nor do I have the time to write a diary/journal type of blog, but if I did I'd do it through my own web site.

The other advantage of having your own web site is that you can use it as a remote back-up for precious files (almost any format), or private pages, not linked to anywhere else and so very unlikely to be found by a search engine. I've still got a short video of my grandson at nine days old which I put there so family members could see it - and Edition 4 is there too.

It depends entirely on your purpose and how you intend to serve your end users. What are you trying to present--what are users looking for? A website
is static--much like a piece of print literature. Your user can find
information, but can't add, offer suggests, etc. A blog is interactive--like a conversation. And that conversation is with a group, not just a dialogue between the website owner and themselves. A blog can be a piece of a website or can stand alone. A blog is a time investment. To remain fresh, the owner needs to post at least twice a week, daily is optimal. Depending on how you design a website, once it is in place, it doesn't require as much "daily maintenance." A blog is a piece of Web 2.0--a way to really make the web a
vehicle for social networking.

Subject: [lace-chat] blogs versus websites

I am having an interesting chat with my web-technie friends at the moment: which is better - a blog or a website? I know you can link a website to a
blog but would like to leave that out of my question.

Could you also give an explanation for your preference?

Thanks
