Driving considerable distances for a short visit is much more normal in America than in England. We've just driven to Iowa for this past weekend to see our son in his final college play, having been two weeks earlier to hear his final choral concert, and going again in 3 weeks for graduation. It's just over 4 hours each way. We tend to go on the Saturday morning and return on Sunday.

We learn from friends that high school sports teams will drive to neighbouring states for matches (up to about 6 hours away).

It looks as if he'll have a 30 hour drive to get to the prospective job in California
