Sue,
You give the driving time but do not say how far it is to Iowa.  I know that
my friends and I will drive to Galena which is on the border of Iowa near the
Mississippi river just to shop and lunch for the day.  I think that probably
takes us 3 hours from here and the distance from Crystal Lake is about 124
miles.  The roads are mainly just two lanes but not too many passing places.
A pleasant country ride.

Mercifully for us, the journey to Iowa takes about 40 minutes of deriving on
busy expressway (up to 5 or 6 lanes in one direction) and then it calms down
and
the express way turns into 2 lanes, with cars travelling at speeds of about 65
-
70 miles and pretty well spread out, until we reach Iowa when there is more
traffic.

I wouldn't want to do 4 hours on UK motorways :(

it two hours of intensive driving in heavy traffic? It makes a big
difference.
