Regarding the SMP nylon winder that was mentioned in the same digest, I
bought mine on my first trip to the NEC in England in 1994 when I first
started lacemaking and I have loved it since. [...]
I still use it at home for winding on lots of thread although the rubber clamps are looking a little worse for wear these days.
I've never been quite sure whether mine (bought from a different source; Holly carries one just like it -- and cheaper <g>) and the SMP one are the same thing. But I use mine all the time, on all my bobbins (though had to get my "squares" made "just so" to fit; they now have slightly tapered tails); spangled ones were all I had when I first got it.
The rubber "grips" on the clamp in my winder dried out and crumbled very fast -- within a couple of years. I scraped them off, and replaced them with 4 "modified" strips of 1/8" thick "plastic" (sort-of like compressed foam; sold in WalMart's craft section, as colourful shapes, or sheets to cut, for ??? purpose). Those have been on, without any deterioration, for 8rs or longer.
