Anyhow, here's what I found on the answer.

Laci's in-house cotton thread for $3.00 is a long fiber thread, I'm going
for it and not paying the big bucks for "Egyptian cotton".

Egyptian Cotton (Egyptisch Katoen) is a *brand name* for lacemaking cotton thread (Kantklosgaren) sold by a Belgian firm (Scharlaeken). Many of us use it, despite the fairly high price, because it's *uniform* -- one knows what to expect from any size (and there are *many*). It's also fairly reliable as to dye-lots (there are many shades of white, off-white, ecru, etc <g>).

This said... Almost all lacemaking/sewing threads are likely to be Egyptian cotton, either totally or in some measure; cotton grown in Egypt is still the longest-staple (least likely to disintegrate due to friction). So, if all you need is a single spool (and it's likely to last you and your granchildren till kingdom come, if all you use it for is mending), going for an "in-house", "generic" brand is the right way to go; it'll probably be as good as anything bought at twice the price, but with a "name sticker" on it...
