I tried a cork mat at my lace class, and it seemed tougher to push the pricker in to than the polystyrene. The waxed paper sounds like a good idea - is it called baking parchment? If so, I already have some, though I can't remember why I bought it since I hardly ever bake. (I love baking, but since I live alone, I have to eat the whole lot myself. I could freeze it, but nothing beats the taste of cakes and biscuits fresh out of the oven!)
