When I started making lace, 14 years ago, in the UK people used to talk about the ultimate goal being Honiton by the way of floral bucks. People who made torchon or beds were looked down on in some quarters (don't shout at me - it's how it was). With travel to Europe having become easier, many lacemakers in the UK were starting to travel over to Belguim and meet with continental lacemakers - and start to buy continental equipment. The suppliers over here picked up on this and started to make the equipment avaiable. Now, we look at the 'english' laces as being just milestones on the way to such laces as Binche which is great and evil - evil because Binche is now being talked about in those hushed tones previously only used for honiton and I do think that puts some lacemakers off it. But great because you hear people talk about doing honiton in the same way as they did about beds - Oh, doing a bit of honiton, what are you going to do after that? I love it - the diversity, the choice, it's wonderful - Thomas Wright was right - it is the romance of the lace pillow.
