Thomas Lester designs with the best of the Binche, and you may think that
the writer of the above quote perhaps had a point
Of course, one person's "gorgeous" is another persons "yuck". Not that I'm saying Bucks is yucky, but different people have different tastes, especially at different times. As a modern young miniskirted teen in the 1960s I thought almost all lace was dowdy, silly, and overly fussy. Now I think the 1960s designs were too plain and boring.
And early Binche is not middle Binche is not modern Binche. In fact, Binche itself isn't really Binche, because the type of lace we now call Binche was made in different towns (Valenciennes, Antwerp) while in Binche itself they made some great Valenciennes...
Design sensibilities change as times change. I would be interested to learn what William Morris (or better still, John Ruskin, who was famous for his nasty cracks) would have had to say about Thomas Lester's fully evolved designs ;-)
