Adele, Thank you very much for all this! I had been looking at Piper's Silks' web site and was confused as to which thread to use, but it sounds as if spun silk is the one to start with.
The patterns I've been trying so far are mainly from Roz Snowden's books (I go to her for classes). Although they're small, I can see most of what I've done, with the help of a magnifying glass. But then I'm only using the simpler, Torchon patterns at the moment, where there are decent gaps between the pins. I've just tried my first Bucks Point pattern, and chose a full size one, for exactly the reason you mentioned.
