Hi All, Another thing that caught my fancy in Ithaca is varigated thread.
Actually Tamara was combining threads of various
colors to make new shades in her Polychrome class but we did
have a little chat about varigated thread. She mentioned that
the color change distance was very important and needed to be shorter for
BL. I think the Milanese class was using varigated
thread but I may be wrong. Also Sumac has made some fantastic tatted Celtic
pieces with varigated combined with straight color.
The varigated thread is really effective in the chains that weave
in and out with the color changing.

So I went to get some more threads for my new love, NL <G>. I'm so thrilled
to be doing a technique where I can actually buy the supplies locally!! So
there were some varigated colors in the tatting thread
I'm using for NL at the moment. I thought of a wonderful use for the
white/blue varigated. When I got home I thought to check the color change.
It's about 12-15". That's about the length of thread I've been using for
the petals on the flower I'm doing (the second one!) so that's not going to
work. I imagine I'll have to make my own varigated to get
the effect I'm after but I'm wondering if there are some thicker threads (I
think I'm using #80 tatting cotton, it's downstairs) with a short change in
color. And what does everybody else think about varigated thread? I love
the effect Sulochona got using varigated for the crocheted tape in her
Romania Point Lace piece!

Jane in Vermont, USA where it got into the 50s F today! It felt like Spring
