You asked about variegated thread thicker than DMC 80. I don't know if it is available in the US, but there is a Turkish cotton by Altin Basak, 50, which is equivalent to DMC Cordonnet 30 and which comes in a variety of solid and variegated colours. Some of the variations are quite bright but there are some which are quite subtle. Worth a try if you can get hold of some.
