It's all a matter of what works for the *notetaker*. For me, X would forever be confused--is that a right-over-left X or a left-over-right X, and which is my right hand anyway? I don't even make a square knot consistently. I may start right-over-left or left-over-right, I just make sure the second half is opposite whatever I did the first half. Robin P.
