Lynn, I really like the book "The Torchon Lace Book by Bridget M. Cook".
That's the book I used to teach myself lace and I recommend it to my students. I really like the format. You work through 2 or 3 lessons; then there are some patterns that you can do to use what you've just learnt. It's very rewarding.
