There is a little thing called a skein splitter...available from Gale Marshall

You will be agast when you see how simple it is....but it works for me. I
just made leaves from various flosses and had full skein lengths of thread to
use. Generally I do not like to use floss, too soft, but sometimes the
colors are worth it. Like Robin, I prefer tatting , topstitching and quilting
threads. etc., for color.
