I have the same problem with needlelace, but also with tatting. Pulling those rings up really rubs in the grime! And then it's impossible to get it out! I think it "becomes one" with the thread. :-> And it's so bothersome - here you've put all this work into a beautiful piece of lace, and you get these horrid grime spots.
I find it helps if I scrub my fingertips with a pumice stone before starting, especially if I'm working with white thread. And then again every hour or two.
I saw the most amazing piece of tatting at the Colorado State Fair last year (or maybe the year before-can't remember). Anyway, it was snowy white - pure white, *gleaming* white. More white than you could get with bleach. I swear she tatted it with gloves on! :->
