I'm guessing that this subject may be of some general interest, so replying on list. I used the same technique to put the elephant on my T shirt as to put the lizard on the baby one. First I finished off all ends into the lace itself, so there were no dangly ends. I washed the T shirt and the lace separately, but didn't do anything else before stitching them together - no stabilising, extra fabrics, starching or anything. Then I used standard poly cotton sewing thread in the appropriate colour to sew the pieces on. Knowing that the lace will last longer than the T shirts, I deliberately started with a knot and used big stitches on the back so that the stitching can be easily undone later. It does pay to stitch down every picot/pinhole, so that the loops remain open. After stitching the finished result gets machine washed, but I don't put it in the tumble dryer. I've nearly finished sewing on a fish motif to another T shirt for another baby, pictures to come soon.
