I must admit that when I make bookmarks or other things that don't require joining, I just start with knots...
I was going to suggest this. Pin the loose ends 5-6 inches above the start of the bookmark. Just start and work the pattern. Finish the bottom with a simple fringe. Then turn the pillow around, loosen the top threads, and fringe the top in the same way. Trim top and bottom fringes as desired.
My easiest fringe is a simple overhand knot with each two (or more) pairs. To make the knot just where I want it, I put a long, glass headed pin in the pattern at the spot for the knot. Loosely tie the knot and slip the loop over the pin. Then it can be tightened down around the pin in the correct spot. I used to have trouble getting the knots where I wanted, until I started anchoring them with a temporary pin.
Happy lacing,
