If you were to ask some people who used them in workshops in Prague... Use whichever technique is necessary to control your temper enough to stop you from fouling the air around you with curses :)
I think the *idea* is most excellent: the thread gets wound on the entire body (thus adding to the weight of the "handle" instead of just the "neck" part - better balance), and is then protected from soiling in the "handle" part by the hood. And you can sure wind a *lot* of thread on one of those babies, which would make them perfect for "production" purposes...
But, in practice... If you're not used to handling them, they're hell (especially, I'm told, if you're trying to learn palms-up method at the same time <g>) I have a pair which I'd bought to add to my collection of bobbins from different countries, but never tried to use it; just keeping that pair "straight" from one Christmas to the next (when they get paraded on the tree) gives me enough headache.. :)
