Well, several people have talked about the direction of the hitch. Another thing is how you pull on the bobbin, especially to lengthen the tether. If you tend to pull straight down, the hitch often gets distorted, and may slip off the head later. To lengthen the thread, pick up the bobbin and turn it sideways. Roll the bobbin to lengthen the thread. This keeps the hitch properly set on the head. If you're consistent about the direction you wind (clockwise or counterclockwise), then you'll get a pattern for which way to hold (head to the left or head to the right) and roll (top towards you or bottom towards you). This method of holding sideways and rolling the bobbin works with double hitches, too, because I nearly always double hitch my bobbins. To anyone not sure of the double hitch, it's not two separate hitches. It just means that, when you make the loop around the head, loop it a second time in the same (clockwise or counter) before putting the turn-back in place. When the thread goes twice around the head, that adds friction so it's less likely to unravel while tensioning. Robin P.
