Yes, Suzy, I use one all the time when I have a pattern that requires me to turn my pillow - almost anything but straight top-to-bottom pattern. It doesn't prevent one's thread from breaking - it just keeps the thread elevated off the pin heads enough to keep them from snagging. Of course one's pins are pushed completely in. One works distal to the curve of the horseshoe just as is shown in the photo.

I think most of us first saw the "horseshoe" at IOLI Convention in Tulsa (?) and they were an instant hit. Now most suppliers carry them. Good value for money, I say!
