Hi
On the Monday after convention the Lace Guild had arranged a trip to Bowes
Museum, Barnard Castle, to have a conducted tour of the house, hear about a
forthcoming lace exhibition and see a selection of their lace.
The exhibition is called Fine and Fashionable: Lace from the Blackborne
Collection. It starts on 9th September and runs until 29th April 2007.
The lace is from the collection of Anthony Blackborne and his son. In the
19th Century he and his son had a shop in South Audley Street, London, where
they sold lace to the fine and fashionable across the world. This collection
illustrates the exquisite design and quality of European lace from 16th to 20th
Century. This is a private collection, which has never before been on public
view.
The Bowes Museum are presenting the lace alongside other decorative arts. The
exhibition also includes work of contemporary artist Catherine Bertola whose
work is informed by lace. Students from Northumbria University are designing
work inspired by the Blackborne lace for inclusion in the exhibition and
University of Sunderland Glass students are creating bespoke pillows and stands
to display the lace. We saw some of the glass pillows they had made to display
the lace. Im sure the display will look stunning with modern pieces being
inspired by the old lace.
Cleveland College of Art & Design Students have been studying the lace and
hope to make items to sell in the shop during the exhibition.
Anyone interested in the Museum can look at their web site:

They also have a wonderful collection of ceramics and art and a café with
good home made food. It is well worth a visit if you are in the area. (North
East England)
Some of the lace from their collection was displayed for us to see, plus a
collar from the Blackborne collection. The collar looked like the kind you
would see King Charles wearing.
