I learned bobbin lace from the late Gunvor Jorgensen, and we always loop the
patterns she pricked for us (lucky us!) completely around the roller and
overlapped them and firmly pinned them down, cutting off excess pricking. I
can't imagine not pinning the edges of the pricking to the pillow every
couple of inches as it goes around.
Very carefully line up the repeats and put several pins straight through
both thicknesses of pricking at matching spots to hold it in place while
pinning the edges to the roller - then remove the temporary pins from the
pattern section. For instance, the center of a spider was an excellent and
easy place to match the overlap. If you can't make it match perfectly
because of the length of the repeat, pad the roller with a thickness (or
even two) of felt to bring it up to the size needed to make the repeats
match perfectly. Be sure and have the overlap be the top layer as the
roller turns so you can continue to work smoothly round and round....and
round....

Subject: Re: [lace] Threads and pins
I bought a beautiful roller pillow in Montreal, and am about to start a
pattern on it. The pricking will be exactly as Malvary described, a loop
larger than the roller.
Here's my question: I've been cautioned that with this method there is a
risk that the pricking might not stay exactly "vertical" but might
eventually work its way slightly diagonal.
Is this really a problem/risk? If so, how can I avoid it?
Thanks,

Hi - while I would agree with this description for a flat, bolster, block
or
cookie pillow, it is very difficult to put cover cloths front to back on
the
pillow when you are using a roller pillow.
When using a roller pillow one of the best methods is to make the pattern
into a loop, larger than the diameter of the roller and then as you unpin
from the back and re-pin at the front, the pins go back into a different
place in the roller each time. If you are making a long length and you
have
the pricking exactly the same size as the roller the holes will gradually
get looser as the pins go into the same place over and over. This is
particularly noticeable with a foam pillow.
