Hi Spiders,

Yet another bit to confuse anyone making garters!

I have made several garters, for my daughter, my daughter-in-law, the
latter's soon to be sister-in-law, and several daughters of friends, and
they have been made increasingly longer! I must add that, after making
the first Bucks Point garter, I generally make Torchon garters, as I don't
want all the hard work on a Bucks Point garter to be wasted and unseen when
it is gathered, and the Torchon garters seem to gather up much more
satisfactorily than the Bucks point. The last one I made was for my
skinny (English size 8 - with a very tiny leg circumference!) daughter, and
for that I made about 48/49 inches - it was double-sided, with the ribbon
and elastic in the centre, and gathered *a lot* - and even if I say it
myself, it looked lovely on her, but it wasn't *too* gathered, by any means!
Thinking back, I am sure I heard somewhere a while ago that a garter needs
to be at least three times the circumference of the leg - but I feel that if
there is time, the longer the better, if it is Torchon.

But of course, if the dress is to be fairly slender, then the garter cannot
be gathered as much as if the dress is to be a full one - it would show
through the material, if it was very bunchy under a fairly straight dress.
Remember also that the colour matters too - it is best to find out whether
the bride is having a white or ivory/cream dress, and make the lace
accordingly. An ecru garter with a white dress can look a bit grubby
against the white, and it is such a shame to spoil such a lot of work!
