2nd century = 101-200

20th century = 1901-2000
21st century = 2001-2100

Many people celebrated the start of the 20th century a year too early!

Going further back in time; the year number is loosely based on when scholars think that Jesus Christ was born, but year numbers as such were seldom if ever recorded for the first few centuries. There was no year 0, so the first century BC was 100BC-1BC though of course no-one knew it at the time!

The Dutch Golden Age covers most of the 1600's.
