I would have thought the easiest way to tell what does what, is to do a
test scan - draw a measured square on a piece of paper, with thick and
thin lines (again, measure width as well as length), and then scan and
print it. Measure the print out, and check for distortion. Then try
testing your test square with enlarging and reducing and printing out
the result - again, check for distortion by measurement. Make sure you
keep the results for next time!
