I have reported the abusive email from the seller of the digital downloads
to eBay.
Their site says:
"We appreciate your effort to help us maintain a safe trading environment.
eBay takes all reports seriously. We will investigate your report and take
the appropriate action, based on the information that you have submitted and
information gathered from other sources.
Please note that we cannot respond to you with the result of our
investigation due to privacy rules."
Which probably means they'll do nothing.
Just tried the professor's site and it was unavailable.
One thought I had was that if lacemakes are selling lacemaking items on
ebay, they could include an extra paragraph after their item description
saying something like:
"Did you know that you can download for free from
http://www.cs.arizona.edu/patterns/weaving/ PDF files of hundreds of
out-of-copyright and donated books and articles about lace and lacemaking,
including instruction books. Some example titles are: (and list here some
that this nasty person would currently be selling)"
