Hello Miriam
First of all I think you need two colours of felt so that the whole
thing is level. You will then need to get the felt squares attached to
the backing board - spray adhesive maybe?
I wouldn't attach the lace very firmly, maybe just a one stitch near
each corner to keep it in place - do it before mounting the felt onto
the board! I think too that I would initially cut the felt squares
bigger than necessary and then make a (transparent) template of some
sort that you can place over the mounted lace in order to cut out
accurately with the lace right in the middle of each square. I'd cut
with a sharp knife or rotary cutter rather than scissors.
Oh!! I've just re-read your message - are the lace squares black and
white? If that's the case you won't need two colours of felt, one
large piece will be OK but you'll need to be very accurate with placing
each square of lace. I'd still only attach with a few tiny stitches
and rely on the glass to hold it securely.
It will probably be worth paying the extra for thick plate glass that
is less likely to break.

For several years now I have been working on my Torchon Chess Board. I
saw it in an old Lace Magazine (UK) and liked the idea. I did my own
designs and finally after about 9 years I think that I'm at the end. I
want to give it to my son as a birthday present because he is a chess
lover.
I have a clear idea of what to do with it after it is mounted but I
have no idea of how to mount all those 4cm squares. I ordered some red
felt as background but have no idea of how to secure the squares to
the felt. I can just leave them as they are since I intend to have a
glass over it but if the glass is being removed or brpoken then all
those small squares will start "wandering" around.
