Just by chance I came across an article by Catherine on ages 36 and 37 of
issue 80 (October 1995) of 'Lace'.
It shows the original black and white photo dated 1946 entitled "The British
Countryside in Pictures" and two interpretations of the photo, one by Roy
Barley dated 1971and one by Colin Carr, undated, entitled "This England",
which is more fanciful than Roy's, and has a window, picture on the wall and
cat on a chair added.
The article (which fills three quarters of the page in addition to the page
with the pictures on) is very interesting and explains, among other things,
how these two interpretations were done independently, neither artist being
aware of what the other had done. At the end it says that Catherine and Roy
will donate £1.00 from the sale of each print to Luton Museum's Pattern Book
Restoration Appeal.
In an email to me Catherine has said "They must obviously be lacemakers, as
there are several designs to choose
from." They seem to be badge makers because they sell pins for a while
variety of subjects from the Tibetan Yak through Adopt Dogs, Rock Collecting
and various other. They trade under the ebay shop name "Amblazon Yourself
With Buttons". Although they only charge a small amount for each, they must
be making a profit.
They aren't currently selling this particular pin, but, if Roy and Catherine
don't mind part of the picture being used, it would stiull be a good idea to
let the seller know of the copyright so, that they do actually acknowledge
the artist. Otherwise it could easily get out of hand and be reproduced all
over the place.
