You are right about getting publicity, especially if the budget is zero
dollars - an ad or two might be well spent if that would open the door for
a newsworthy article in the newspaper, a tradeoff (if published in time?!).

The publication of information after the event, ie. coverage of the event
was our problem, too, in NJ. Although, I still maintain that I could have
gotten
Biff to come from the David Letterman show to the Tat-Off if only I had
started the publicity campaign earlier. Unfortunately, he was already
committed
to an Oyster-Eating contest.

Perhaps an answer would be to have an "Event before the Event". Ie.
Thirty Women to make 2000 Lace Flowers
The Land of Lincoln Lacemakers have vowed not to rest until 2000 lace
flowers have been made. Starting on Friday April 10th, thirty women dedicated
to
the ancient art of bobbin lace making will assemble in pajamas with pillows,
lace pillows that is, and they will "lace on" until 2000 flowers have been made

for gifts for their convention to occur on blah at blah. The convention is
expected to draw 400 lacemakers from all over the country. Blah blah.

The photo op of women in their pajamas making lace will appeal to the trivia
editor.

I frequently see pictures in our local paper of two women standing next to a
hair dresser or something, holding up some item, and it is a photo op to
announce a hair-cut-a-thon to raise money for the high school after prom party,

or some such thing.

MInd you, I think a publicity budget would be a marvelous thing for the
IOLI. Our current approach of sending people out to state fairs for "one on one

conversions", doesn't seem as time efficient as having Janice on TV for 2
minutes.

PS. Another nitty-gritty thing I hadn't realized about newspaper reporting
is that they want a photo of people of all ages doing something. The fact that
we were so homogenous as to age had me racing around looking for young people
for them to interview. Ideally there would be a young person, a middle aged
person, an old person, and a man in the Event before the Event photo-op.
