It actually makes no difference to the appearance whether the gimp goes under 
the right or left hand thread.  What is altered is the twists before and 
after.

If you analyse the procedure and want to have a twist before and after the 
gimp you need to do three twists in total; the third 'sits' above and below the 
gimp itself.  So, assuming you have one twist only already, and you go under 
the left hand thread then the gimp will slip between those twists and it will 
appear as if there is no twist.  And if you have two twists to match the rest 
of the pattern and go under the left thread it will now appear as if you have 
only one.

For this reason I teach my students to lift the right thread (it's the right 
one (as in correct) to do!), then as they do the next twist they see that the 
'gate is still open' and that they need to do the third twist.  If they 
lift-the-left they have to remember to do the extra twist first.
