My very first piece of needlelace was my daughter's wedding veil. It is Limerick lace - the darning/embroidery on net. I had no idea quite what I was doing - but I did it anyway!!!!!!!!! :))
It is fingertip length. I took a bow pattern from a Carrickmacross design in "The Art of Lacemaking" by Ann Collier, and adapted it to my needs. I then put thumbnail sized motifs thoughout the veil - a bee, a Tudor Rose for the English side of the family, a thistle for the Scots of the bridegroom, wheatears - as both Helen and I make Beds lace , which is full of wheatears!!, etc. It has been on display a few times at various "Wedding Lace" displays, and was in the Exhibition at the Denver convention 3 years ago. (How can that have been 3 years ago?!! Where has the time gone?!!) It was not bad for a first go - and got me hooked on needlelace! :)) Oh Dear! another addiction!!!!!!! :)) The humourous part of making it, was when I went to buy the net. The lady behind the counter insisted that I had to have the fabric first, and then match the veiling to the fabric. I explained the fabric was not purchased yet, and was over in USA anyway, and she got a bit nasty. I eventually persuaded her to show me the veiling. Well after all that kerfuffle - there was only one white veiling to be had!!! -- So why worry about matching it up?!! It was a "Take it or leave it" choice!!!!!!!! :) I have watched with awe at Annette's veil lace as it has been made. I met her when she first came to Australia, and we have been lacemaking friends ever since. All her honiton lace is beautiful - perfect tension, and exquisite designs. She is a very gifted lady.
