Firstly I must say Annette that the veil that you made for your daughter’s
lace is so beautiful. Thank you for sharing this with us.

I read nearly all the emails to lace but rarely post! However I just had to
send an email when Betty Ann asked, to share the details of my wonderful
wedding lace, which my mother (Pat Hallam) made for me.

We have been trying to work out when the lace for the veil was started – but
I have been married for 16 years on August 1st this year and we just cannot
remember! However I think it might even have been before I met my husband
(so before 1986)! Of course lots of other lace was worked on whilst this
was being made and by 1992 we had approximately 22 yards – sufficient to
edge my veil, which was approximately 6ft long. It definitely trailed on
the floor so it might even have been longer (perhaps I should get it out and
measure!). The lace was a design by Ylva Homberg of Sweden and was worked
in 150 linen – it also edged the pages of the Lacemakers’ Circle magazine
for 10 years! Mum spent a holiday in France just before the wedding sewing
the lace on and suspended the veil in the caravan to prevent any creases!
Heather Harris very kindly made a lovely Honiton butterfly for me and this
was sewn onto the veil. The veil was absolutely beautiful and looked just
perfect – but we nearly had a major catastrophe as I left for the church! A
breeze blew the veil and it was caught on a flower trellis by the door
almost pulling it from my head! Thankfully no major damage apart from a
small tear that was not noticeable.

My wedding dress was also edged in lace – 15 yards of Bucks Point – the Rams
Horn pattern made in cream silk with a cucumber edge. Apparently 55 tallies
to the yard! There was a last minute rush to get this completed – but mum
managed it and attached it to my dress!

A handkerchief was attached to my wedding bouquet. This was the Eternity
Rings pattern, a Bridget Cook design. This was made in silk. The lace
theme was completed with a horseshoe, garter and a lace tiara in
Bedfordshire lace, which replaced my floral headdress for the evening
reception.

I still have my dress and veil (and all my other lace wedding items). I
could never part with them.

Thank you mum!
