Hello Rhiannon
It's likely to be mercerised. I've had a quick rummage through my
sewing machine threads, some of which are quite old, but can't find
anything which says satinised.
The mercerisation process involves caustic soda which makes the cotton
fibres swell and become stronger and more lustrous; the resulting
thread is smoother so goes through a sewing machine easier. These are
all properties which would be required for a satin effect. Is it 3 ply
for regular seam stitching or 2 ply for embroidery?
Do you have any idea as to how old the thread might be? If it's pre
1960 you might find it on

PS - I've now made 14 bookmarks from the one pattern and still have
ideas for more.

Having inherited my grans sewing box I have finally sorted it out and
found
some interesting threads! Especially some invisible thread as Brenda
used on
one of her bookmark creations- yipee. Anyhow, I came acorss Coats
"satinised"
and wondered if this is the same process as mercerised?
Thanks
Rhiannon
