Hello Rhiannon
Dewhurst, Coats, Tootle, Amman all make/made Sylko which is a pretty
standard sewing machine thread, 3ply, Z twisted. The confusion comes
about because of the various company mergers and take-overs over the
years, but all basically the same thread, and the three shells is, I
believe, their trade mark.
Sylko used to be available in sizes 36 and 40 but I think it's only
made in size 50 now. If there is no number on the label, especially if
it's fairly recent, ie Tootle or Amman, assume it's size 50.
Dewhurst Star, if it is polyester, will probably be akin to the other
readily available polyester machine threads such as Drima or Gutermann.
Re: the Pearsall's silk - without seeing it I couldn't say if it's the
same size as superfine.
My offer to measure any thread which is sent to me remains. In many
instances it's the way a new, or "new-old" thread gets onto the
Addendum list and thence into the next edition of the book, but if you
have something that's unknown and without a label I'll still measure
for you. I need about a metre of thread to do a winding plus the label
(or a photo/scan) or all of the words on the label. A bit more than a
metre helps if it is *very* fine, a bit less if its very thick.

I have a small confusion with sylko thread. How come so many
manufacturers
made with the sylko name? Did Dewhusrt become Tootal as their labels
still use
the three shells motif? Then some sylko i have is made by coats- total
confusion if you ask me.
There is additional confusion by having threads not listed by Brenda -
(maybe
I need to send you them or you can straighten me out via email).
So; listed under Coats Sylko is 36 & 40 but I have 50.
Then there's Coats Satinised (as earlier mentioned) which are 40 but i
have
two that are mercerised cotton and two that are machine twist. Is
there any
difference?
I have the normal Dewhurst Sylko in 40 but also have a polyester
thread by
Dewhurst called "Star"
Then to the Tootal Sylko threads which i have two types, both of which
are
mercerised. The first one shows a 40, where the list only gives 50.
But the
second spool type has no pile numbers - is this the 50?
FINALLY I have a JAS Pearsall & co machine silk (50yds) "fine size" -
is this
the "superfine" listing??
Sorry to dump multiple queries on the list but I found it amazing what
gems I
found in an old sewing box.
THANK YOU
Rhiannon
