Could it possibly have been a similar system to that which the
lacemakers worked under - the dealer provided the thread - or in this
case the yarn - to work a pattern and by knowing how much yarn should be
used, and only providing that, prevented the workers from working and
selling items made from his/her yarn to anyone else?
Also, if you were producing hanks of knitting wool for sale, you would
presumably aim to have the same amount of yarn in each hank?
