My teacher said she could always tell whether something had been left in pins or not. It's not just a matter of stretching/relaxing. There's a crispness to the pattern that only develops by sitting pinned for a day or so.
Notice how thead comes of the spool in longish loops? Notice that after it's been on the bobbin it's in much shorter loops? Thread has 'memory'. It needs some time to get used to its new shape. Then it will cleanly navigate the curves, twists, and about-faces of it's thread path. If taken out of pins too quickly, it's a little sloppy in how it travels through the lace. Robin P.
