When making a tassel, I find that if I take the thread off the bobbins by removing the hitch then there are kinks and curls that need removing. On the other hand, if I unwind the thread 'properly' to past the length I want the tassel and let the bobbin weight pull on the thread while I do whatever style knotting or weaving I have chosen, then there is very little curve left on the thread.
