When I first started trying to begin projects on my own I kept forgetting to take out the temporary pins, but once you have seen the slightly untidy results of that a couple of times it reminds you to take them out next time around. Also during my first couple of years I was often reluctant to work backwards to fix a mistake (especially as they were not usually seen for ages, because of the pins), but now am much more inclind to want the piece to be the best I can do.

there were a few times I got in a mixup with a particular place and tried to make it work for me, but now find that to go back to where I can see it is right is usually the best thing for me and as I am inclind to reject that piece if the mistake shouts at me, it is time better spent to go back and fix it. Saying all that I doubt I have done a 'perfect piece' but now have much more lace I am very happy with and content to give to someone instead of adding to my pile of rejected pieces. But we all have to work at it and find what is best for us.
Well done on your first project on your own.
Sue T,

You may remember a while back that I asked for help in starting a square, my first project on my own without a book or a teacher? I am now pleased to know
that what I have done so far (almost finished) has been fudged and wangled
(didnt know the name for this!). Still as someone else said - it has taken me
a long time to get it to look that good!!
Nancy

Continuing from starting and finishing

As far as I am concerned we all make lace for the love of it. I consider a
piece of lace to be good if it looks good and is made so that it is
suitable
for its purpose. If carefully done the odd fudge/wangle will not show - so
why
worry. This is why I love making Floral Bucks - you can get away with
murdering the threads. Instead of fudging or wangling I prefer to call it
'using your initiative' - it sounds so much better.

Best wishes

Alex
