I have been wondering, especially with UK legislation due to
outlaw 'ordinary bulbs' shortly, whether there is some kind of energy
saving equivalent to the daylight bulb, or should I stock up?

I have an energy saving daylight bulb, 20w, (bayonet fitting, coiled type which will fit in my table lamp) which I bought from a craft supplier - Daylight Studios make them. They are not cheap! You might find you have, like we do here in Tamworth, a local electrical wholesaler who also sells to the public, it is possible that their prices might be better than the craft outlets.

It would be interesting to see what the Textile Conservation Centre in Liverpool have made of these - whether they have tested them - as in the bulbs they had on their comparison display, daylight came out the worst for textile care - due to the high UV output. Believe it or not, where textiles are concerned, the old fashioned tungsten bulbs were the kindest!
