I think the lace is machine made, as most things of that size would have to be in this day and age. However, the Regalia of the Knights is impressive. Oddly enough, when my husband I stayed at the Waldorf Astoria for our 25th wedding anniversary, a large percentage of the other guests were these Knights and Dames of the Holy Sepulcher, who were assembling, and also having a service at St. Patrick's Cathedral. It was rather odd to walk into the Waldorf Astoria and be the only people not wearing capes with large crosses on them, and medals and other spectacular wear. However, your title brings up another question I have always wondered about. It would seem to me that the Vatican would likely own vast quantities of liturgical lace, vestments, altar cloths, etc.,dating from the great days of lace making, and probably being the most exquisite pieces of lace ever made. I made inquiries of our guide at the Vatican, but he did not seem to know anything about this. Then, while visiting an obscure library in New York State to see the lace book assembled by Marian Powys, the librarian, who had known Ms. Powys told me that Ms. Powys had been consulted by the Vatican about their lace. This is the only indication that I have heard that my supposition is correct. But, this consultation may have been in the 1920s or 1930s. Does anyone know about lace that may be stored or owned by the Vatican? There had been some hope that when the present Pope became Pope, his interest in the Latin Mass might result in more display of lace, but, not being a Catholic, I can't say I have followed this issue with any attention. Has anyone ever seen any lace at the Vatican or know of anyone who has had access to it? It would certainly be a wonderful subject for study, if there was some great collection of lace stored there.
