Janice and anyone else interested, As you are discovering, you need to have smooth clean fingers to handle the silk, and there are special 'silk' lotions or creams to put on, before you handle it, especially if you have been gardening. I have heard that embroiderers who use silk will sand their fingertips (eradicating the fingerprint? I don't know...). Maybe needleworkers on the list could comment.
