I think looking at the holes in the center will give some insight.  There is 
one toward the left, which, when magnified sufficiently, clearly shows the 
ladder effect you get in knitting when a stitch unravels.  I don't think there 
is anything comparable in bobbin lace, but there I certainly am open to 
rebuttal.  But what else is going on there is puzzling.  Also, I'm wondering if 
the actual edge of the edging is something similar to silk ribbon.  lrb
