oops. forget what I just said about right side in Flanders & Mechlin The
explanation below makes perfect sense. I guess the gimp in Bucks is almost
always continuous?

This is why I asked--I'm learning a lot from this discussion.

Subject: Re: [lace] right vs wrong sides

In Flanders and Binche, the lace is worked with the "wrong" side up. In
Binche,
this is because we add pairs and throw them out frequently, and when the lace
is
taken off the pillow and the threads trimmed, the tiny little whiskers are on
the wrong side.

And my argument for Flanders is that Anne Marie said so in September! She had
just finished a wonderful new pattern which shows a panorama of Brugge, when
she
realized that she had drawn it on the "right side" as the scenes would appear,
and had forgotten to reverse the image before doing the design. So, the design
had to be copied from the "wrong side" of the vellum. That was a simple fix,
but it engraved the "wrong side" bit of information in my brain forever! But
the practical reason for the top of the work being the wrong side in Flanders
is
that sometimes the gimps just drop in and drop out, without being carried along
in back. So again, whiskers are being left on the back side.
