I've discovered a very nice solution: It's called "Gloves in a Bottle"
and is wonderful for smoothing the hands. It should be applied
beforehand, to give it time to absorb. It leaves no greasy residue,
and, in fact, once it has absorbed, it won't wash off (because it's in
the skin). So put in on, let it absorb, and then wash your hands to
remove any dirt you've picked up in the meantime, and you're ready for
lacemaking, embroidery, or any other fine work!
I first learned about it from a man who came into the quilt shop I
happened to be shopping in. They had it, and he bought some, saying it
was the best thing he could use on his hands before he started his fine
woodworking because anything else left patches of oil on the wood which
acted as a resist when he started applying the finish!
