The writer in me, likes the concept of a mystery code that HIDE stands for "Here I Die Eternal" (either as a bobbin or the lace itself, ie: my work lives on past me.)
How about Habeo Iacio Decens Excedo (or loosely, I hold, to throw, to properly, excel - or some version of that.) Perhaps someone knows Latin on the list and could do it better service. I like to think that the term meant something wonderful as though in general and historically (loosely representing 500 years), many were not educated, they did attend church (and the King James version of the Bible was yet to come in English, so Latin was often the common 'thread' [pun] in religion, education and books (what few there were that the wealthy had, for the first roughly 200 years.) FWIW and common knowledge; it was common for the western side of the pond to change the Y's to I's (and grey to gray, and style in using eating utensils, etc. ad infinitum), as a sign of independence, but not applicable to this bobbin.
