Not only language, but layman's interpretation take part.  Many knitters are 
asked what they are 'crocheting,' or the converse.  People often don't 
understand that technique contributes to the end result-only that the finished 
product looks similar, or they have only one point of reference in their 
environmental or mental file.

To illustrate the point; not long ago in the US, there was a commercial 
(cartoon 
graphics) that illustrated the desirable quilted properties of Northern 
bathroom 
tissue.  Many were amused as the grey haired chignon'ed ladies were shown with 
knitting needles in motion, 'quilting' the debossed pattern and relief on the 
toilet paper.  They modified it a short time later, to a needle and thread 
action, certainly after hearing from many.
